This session was closer to the main land, we left with an early morning start to enjoy the peaceful surroundings…
Our destination was the twenty seven metre pin, a five minute ride north from Tairua. On arrival at the spot, I viewed a lot of activity mid water on the Raymarine sounder. We set up for our first drift, with the good timing of a scenic sunrise.
As you will see, the local reef fish are very hard on the soft baits. So for this session, I had a new strategy to reduce the bait loss…
This time I used a sixty gram Daiwa Bay Rubber, I soon had evidence of what was destroying the soft
baits! It was the small reef fish, known as a leather jacket… Their teeth are very obvious and make
for quick destruction while munching on the soft baits. The fish had no chance with the dual hooks on the
attractive Bay Rubber lure.
While retrieving the leather jacket, I also spotted some small king fish following it up. With the next cast using the same lure and a fast retrieve, I was straight in to some king fish fun on the light gear. Check out the following You Tube video link filmed with the Tachyon waterproof helmet camera.
The morning was a few hours of small jig madness, with each of us catching and releasing many fish. I did also try a few drops with the larger two hundred grams jigs, but the area was plagued with rat king fish… I soon switched back to the more sporting smaller jigs, getting plenty of strikes on the Daiwa eighty gram Pirates.
After Mike caught a few more, we soon called it quits on this Jetskifishing does Tairua trip.
We raced back with smooth seas and with a few big air ramps on the Tairua bar, it was a great way to finish a fun trip!
